Das Kreieren von Düften ist eine intellektuelle Arbeit.
Sie umfasst das Konzeptionieren, Schreiben und wiederholte Arrangieren einer Duftdramaturgie, die sich schliesslich, nach vielen Überarbeitungen, in einer handwerklichen Umsetzung als Duft materialisiert - sei es als Parfum auf der Haut, als Raumduft, als funktionelles Produkt oder als Teil eines Kunstwerkes. In diesem Zustand verweilt der Duft eine gewisse Zeit, um letztendlich wieder zu verschwinden, sich buchstäblich in Luft aufzulösen.
Diese ‚Dramaturgie der Flüchtigkeit’ zu meistern und sie in einer Formulierung festzuhalten ist Aufgabe der Parfumeurinnen und Parfumeure. Dafür steht ihnen heute eine Bibliothek von mehreren tausend Rohstoffen und Duftbausteinen zur Verfügung, teils aus natürlichen Quellen, teils aus den Laboratorien der modernen Alchimisten.
Jeder einzelne dieser Duftbausteine vermag es bei denjenigen, die sie wahrnehmen, Emotionen auszulösen - höchst individuell, unmittelbar und unaufgefordert!

Bei der Konzeptionierung eines Duftes entwickelt sich im Idealfall zwischen Parfumeur und Kund:in eine gemeinsame Sprache, um die gewünschten Emotionen zu materialisieren, also sie in Duftbausteine und Akkorde zu übersetzen.
Zu Beginn einer Zusammenarbeit wird zunächst abgeklärt, welche technischen und ästhetischen Kriterien der Duft erfüllen soll. Dann erstellt der Parfumeur einige ‚Duftskizzen’ - erste Entwürfe von Mischungen, bestehend aus nur wenigen Duftbausteinen. Diese werden zunehmend erweitert, überprüft und modifiziert, bis zuletzt eine Komposition entstanden ist, die in ihrer ‚Dramaturgie der Flüchtigkeit’ dem gewünschten Duft entspricht.

Creating fragrances is an intellectual work. It includes the conception, writing and repeated arranging of a scent dramaturgy, which, after many modifications, finally materializes as a fragrance in the artisanal implementation - be it as a perfume on the skin, as a room scent, as a functional product or as part of a work of art. In this state, the fragrance lingers for a period of time before finally disappearing, literally dissolving in the air.
To master this 'dramaturgy of volatility' and to capture it in a formulation is the task of the perfumers. Today, they have at their disposal a library of several thousand raw materials and fragrance components, partly from natural sources, partly from the laboratories of modern alchemists.
Every single of these fragrance components has the ability to trigger emotions in those who perceive them - highly individual, immediate and unsolicited.
These emotions are the fuel of every fragrance creation. Directing them effectively with the selection and interaction of materials determines the success of the fragrance.
Creating fragrances is also a pleasurable work, full of imagination and unexpected discoveries.
When conceiving a fragrance, ideally, a common language develops between the perfumer and the customer in order to materialize the desired emotions, i.e. to translate them into fragrance components and chords.
At the beginning of a collaboration, it is first clarified which technical and aesthetic criteria the scent should fulfill. Then the perfumer creates some 'scent sketches' - first drafts of blends consisting of just a few perfume components. These are increasingly being extended, checked and modified, until at last a composition has been created which, in its 'dramaturgy of volatility', corresponds to the desired fragrance.
